Nope. I pay for it, I keep it

Q. Have you or your child ever broken something expensive in a store? What happened?

answered by Paul Gobat

Yes.

When my youngest daughter was about 12 she knocked an $80 figurine off a shelf.

The owner was on us like flies on sugar demanding that we immediately pay for the item.

“Of course!” I said, “I am also a business owner and understand you need to be paid.”

So, we picked up the pieces and took them to the counter. The owner offered to throw it away for us, but I wanted it to repair at home.

Then I noticed that the item had glue lines from where it was broken before. It seemed like the item was broken several times before, so I pointed this out to the owner.

“OK, the owner said, “I give to you half price but I keep pieces”.

Nope. I pay for it, I keep it.

“OK, the owner said, “Give me 5 dollar and I keep pieces”.

Nope. I pay for it, I keep it.

There are many things I can put up with but a person that intentionally places an item in harms way and feigns anger when something happens is not one of them.

My daughter still has the figurine 18 years on. Ultimately, I paid $5.
