German chocolate cake is not, in fact, of German origin. The recipe was named after a man, Sam German, who invented a type of sweet baking chocolate for the Baker’s Chocolate Company (a popular cake recipe called for “German’s chocolate”). Over the years though, the possessive was dropped and people just called the popular recipe “German chocolate cake”.
